• La Plata Electric Association directors name 2011-2012 officers


    District 2 Director Jerry L. McCaw selected president of the board

    DURANGO, Colo. – Well known La Plata County resident Jerry L. McCaw (District 2) has been elected president of the board of directors of La Plata Electric Association (LPEA). As per the LPEA by-laws, officers are elected each year at the first board meeting following the electric cooperative’s annual meeting, this year held May 14. Immediate past President Terry Alley (District 1) did not seek re-election.

    Tom Compton (District 2) was elected Vice President, with Directors Pam Patton (District 4) and Joe Wheeling (District 4) to continue as Secretary and Treasurer, respectively. Wheeling will also maintain his seat on the Tri-State Generation and Transmission Board. Board members holding board seats on the Colorado Rural Electric Association (CREA) and Western United are, respectively, Tom Compton (District 2) and Bob Formwalt (District 1).

    “These are challenging times in the energy business, and we will have some important decisions to make in the coming months,” said McCaw, who has served on the LPEA board since 2000. “As always, however, at La Plata Electric we will continue our focus on providing safe, reliable electricity at the lowest cost to our membership while at the same time being environmentally responsible.”

    A Durango native who attended Ignacio schools, Fort Lewis College and Colorado State University, McCaw holds a Bachelor's in Civil Engineering and is a former engineer with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Currently a farmer/rancher, McCaw served 15 years on the Basin Co-op Board of Directors, is a past member of the Ignacio School Board and has served on numerous local and state advisory committees. He is a member of the La Plata and Colorado Cattlemen’s Association, the Habitat Partnership Program for La Plata and Archuleta Counties and a member of the National Cattle Feeders’ Association. He was also a recipient of the Durango Area Chamber Resort Association’s “Agriculturalist of the Year.”
