• La Plata Electric to close Sale Barn Canyon trailhead Aug. 15

One-day closure part of LPEA capital project to improve system reliability

DURANGO, Colo. – The Sale Barn Canyon trailhead in the Carbon Junction area of south Durango will be closed on Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, as part of a La Plata Electric Association (LPEA) electric distribution line up-grade. For safety, all trail users – hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders – will be denied access during the line construction and are asked to avoid the area on that day.

In early July, LPEA initiated this “reconductor” project on an existing distribution line located on private and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property in the Carbon Junction area. Essentially, this project involves setting new poles and pulling (stringing) new conductor, or distribution wire, on these overhead poles.

“This budgeted, capital project will increase the capacity of the overhead distribution line in the vicinity of businesses such as Tarpley’s RV, New Country Auto, Basin Coop and Dietz Market,” said Randy Ferris, LPEA land rights administrator. “This particular section of line is now too small to meet the demand for electricity in the area and we are rectifying that. We appreciate the cooperation of the community while we get this new conductor in place.”

An additional Sale Barn Canyon trailhead closure day is anticipated before the project’s completion in late September/early October. LPEA will provide notification as soon as that date is confirmed.

The Carbon Junction project is part of LPEA’s on-going commitment to provide safe and reliable electricity to its member-consumers. For further information regarding the project, contact Randy Ferris at 970.382.3512 or rferris@lpea.coop.

LPEA, a Touchstone Energy Cooperative established in 1939, provides to its more than 30,000 members, with in excess of 42,000 meters, safe, reliable electricity at the lowest reasonable cost, while being environmentally responsible.
