Fifth-grade students invited to enter LPEA safety poster contest

“Be Safe Around Electricity” is the theme for the contest

DURANGO, Colo. – La Plata Electric Association, Inc. (LPEA) invites the fifth-grade students of Archuleta and La Plata counties to participate in the Cooperative's first annual safety poster contest. The theme for this year’s contest is “Be Safe Around Electricity”.

The contest will offer awards for both fifth-grade students and their teachers at each participating school in LPEA’s service area. Winners receive an Amazon Fire Kid’s Edition Tablet ($100 value) and their teacher will receive an Amazon gift card ($50 value) from La Plata Electric Association, Inc.

"Education, training and information is one of the core cooperative principles. We're pleased to provide electrical safety education programs to our local schools and look forward to receiving our first safety poster entries,” said La Plata Electric’s Communications Coordinator Lonnie Tucker.

The safety poster contest is part of a continuing education program designed to inform students about electricity and electrical safety. "We're grateful for the support of the teachers who provide their students with this electrical safety information and invite us to speak in their classrooms," said La Plata Electric’s Distributive Generation Energy Advisor Amanda Miles.

The contest reinforces electric safety messages that are presented to students at the local elementary and intermediate schools in Archuleta and La Plata counties. “Be Safe Around Electricity” was selected to enhance the student’s awareness of potential electrical hazards they might encounter inside and around their home, in their neighborhood, at their school or local community park. Children should stay away from electric facilities such as substations, transmission towers, transformers, solar panels and downed power lines. LPEA is dedicated to the education and safety of children.

Only fifth-graders, and their teachers, in the La Plata Electric Association, Inc. service area are eligible to participate in the safety poster contest. Entries will become the property of LPEA and will not be returned. The deadline for participation is Monday, May 29. Safety poster contest rules and electrical safety tips are available online at www.lpea.coop or contact Lonnie Tucker at (970) 382-3511.
